About
Shemesh Farms began in 2013 with a vision of creating a social enterprise that would provide meaningful employment and community to adults with neuro and physically diverse abilities. In 2015, the vision was realized.
Following the Woolsey Fire destruction of the Shalom Institute campus, Shemesh Farms launched a satellite site at the Malibu Jewish Center and Synagogue where Farm Fellows (our Shemesh Farms employees), volunteers, and staff tend to in-ground micro and hydroponic tower gardens, work to fulfill orders, and hold business meetings. Farm Fellows participate in every aspect of the enterprise which includes farming and composting, curating recipes, branding, marketing, product development, sales, and the packaging and shipping of our products sold via our online store as well as small boutique stores around the country.
For more information, please contact our Shemesh Farms Director Nicky Pitman, nicky@shalominstitute.com or at 818.889.5500 x. 110.
Shemesh Farms also offers Shemesh Experiences with monthly classes in Culinary Arts, Farming Arts, and Nature Arts. Taught by experts, the hour-long experiences are designed for adults of all abilities to foster friendships and positive recreational and social interactions.
Shemesh Farms is supported by a generous grant from the Jewish Community Foundation of Los Angeles, as well as the generosity from the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles, Erwin Rautenberg Foundation, the Diane, and Guilford Glazer Philanthropies, Hillside Memorial Park and Mortuary, and from individual donors and sales.
